Over 2.85 lakh petitions backing net neutrality submitted to Trai - ET Telecom
The petitions urge the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) to bar the telecom operators from introducing differential pricing of data packets used over the internet, which would fall foul of the concept of net neutrality that guarantees consumers equal and non-discriminatory access to all data, apps and services on the Internet.
Rajya Sabha MP Rajeev Chandrasekhar handed over these petitions to Trai secretary Sudhir Gupta, according to a statement issued by the MP and Change.Org on Thursday.
TRAI has sought views from public on the issue of regulating over-the-top players, or apps, by April 24. It had floated the consultation paper late in March. Critics say any move to regulate the apps would violate the principles of a free Internet.
Chandrasekhar had earlier written to the regulator in January, calling for a balanced, multi - stakeholder consultation on the issue.
Chandrasekhar also had taken to the social media to appeal to Indian consumers to participate in the consultation by sending in their objections to TRAI.
