First Braille phone launched in UK for 60 GBP, US to wait - Northern Voices Online
This is a great product for the blind. There is no doubt about it. First Braille phone has been launched in UK for 60 GBP. But US will have to wait.
London: Now a Braille phone is finally here in the market. Though we saw several prototypes being showcased in different tech fares, nonetheless it is the first time that a complete Braille handset has been introduced in the market for commercial purpose.
The new handset has been introduced by OwnFone. The company is based in London, UK and its Braille handset uses customized 3D printing techniques to let people with complete blindness use it with quite ease.
Though there is no timeline for its launch in the United States, there are reports that the OwnFone may introduce the handset in other markets across the world next year.
In UK the handset has been priced at 60 pounds. There is no denying the fact that making such a handset is a tricky job and the price tag seems to be reasonable.
The handset from OwnFone is not a smartphone but a basic handset. BBC says that the Braille phone comes with a combination of designs that include not only 3D printing, but also pre-programmable buttons for crucial contacts. The owners of the handset will not have to search for contacts like we do, but will be able to contact their friends and family by just pushing a button.
Reports suggest that this Braille handset has been designed by Tom Sunderland. He says that the phone for blinds is unique due to the fact that this comes with 3D printing techniques. He says that 3D technique will give a fast and cost-effective way to create personalized Braille buttons. There is no denying the fact that this will be a godsend for many people.
