DoT starts work on next spectrum auction - Telecompaper (subscription)

India's Department of Telecom (DoT) asked the country's telecommunications watchdog TRAI to provide its recommendations for the future auction of 29 licences currently used by operators in 18 of the 22 service areas across India which will expire in 2015-2016, The Economic Times reports. The DoT expects to conduct a spectrum auction at least 18 months prior to expiry of the licences, according to the report. The 29 licences together hold about 198 MHz of spectrum, in both the 900 MHz and 1,800 MHz spectrum bands. Some of the licences are currently operated by Bharti Airtel, Reliance Telecom and Idea Cellular.
