The new Twitter design, which is showing up for a small set of users, includes a wide background photo across the top of the page and a smaller profile picture on the left-hand side, similar to member pages on Facebook's rival social network. Some postings are displayed more prominently and in bolder type.

The changes come in addition to an overall design refresh that occurred in January.

Last week, the company's quarterly results revealed that its timeline views decreased from 159 billion to 148 billion. This is the first time that this has happened and helped to cause a 20pc fall in the company's share price. Twitter's share price remains 15pc below its level of 10 days ago.

The company's chief executive, Dick Costolo, promised that Twitter would change some elements of the service to try and address concerns over slowing growth.

"We are doubling down in 2014 to accelerate the growth of our core user base," he said. "We have a very clear road map across a number of dimensions that we will use to drive interaction and engagement and make it easier for a broader audience to get Twitter, to understand Twitter more quickly."

Twitter, with 241 million users compared with Facebook's 1.2 billion, wants to make the site easier to use, favouring designs that feature images and experimenting with content based on topics and which may help newer users understand the service better than they can with chronological displays.

Twitter employs more than 140 people at its Dublin office. (Additional reporting from Bloomberg)
