Nokia going ahead with Android phone?

Could Nokia really be on the verge of releasing an Android phone? According to reports, it is, and will do it in a week or so at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

You may recall, Nokia had been working on a sort-of Android phone last year, before it agreed to be acquired by Microsoft for $US7.4 billion.

Since Microsoft and Android's maker, Google, are mortal enemies, a lot of people (myself included) presumed the Nokia Android-ish phone would never see the light of day. Now the Wall Street Journal says it will see the light of day, and soon.

The WSJ says Microsoft has agreed to go ahead with releasing the enemy phone, because its own operating system, Windows Phone 8, doesn't work well in low-cost phones, and it needs to get market share in developing markets.

I happen to think Windows Phone 8 works very well indeed, better than Android, in low-cost phones like the $140 Nokia Lumia 520, so I'm not convinced that could be the reason. Maybe they're talking about super-low-cost, sub $50 phones, or something. But doesn't Nokia have its Asha phones for that market?
