Electrolyte fixes battery issue? - Investor's Business Daily
Fires in lithium-ion batteries in Tesla (TSLA) cars and Boeing (BA) airplanes were major issues last year. But researchers at UNC believe they have found a fix to keep the batteries from spontaneously combusting. The team found that the lubricant perfluoropolyether, which is used to keep marine life from sticking to ships, could combine with lithium salts to make a safer battery. The electrolyte is stable at degrees of 392 degrees F and higher vs. the current solvent in batteries, which starts to degrade at 93 degrees. Further research a waits.
