Samsung Galaxy Gear is expensive for its performance - Business Today

The reinvented wristwatches that became the topic of conversation last year forced Samsung to come up with one. As these smartwatches are an extension to a smartphone, Samsung seems to have taken this literally. The Galaxy Gear pairs only with a few selected Samsung flagship smartphones and not just any Android phone.

The brushed metal casing with the striking rubber strap makes the Gear look attractive. There is no button on the front and a single button on the watch powers up the display and turns it off. Double clicking the button launches S Voice. Rest of the navigation is done by swiping the display. The 1.6-inch display with 320x320 pixel resolution is sharp.
There is a 1.9-megapixel camera added to the strap that can be launched by swiping from top to bottom. But as shown in advertisements, the camera quality is poor and it can't even produce decent images worth sharing on social networking sites. Swiping down also helps in going back. Left or right swipes give access to all apps like logs, contacts, phone dialer, image gallery and pedometer. Calls can be answered directly from the Gear. But we had to bring it near to our ear to clearly converse. Surprisingly, the call clarity was good and rarely did anyone complain about it.
This funky wristwatch is accompanied with a charging dock and a wall charger. The watch cannot be directly charged and has to be placed in the dock that has a USB port. So, if the dock is not around, the Gear can't be charged. However, you won't run out of charge quickly. A fully charged Gear paired with the Galaxy Note 3 over Bluetooth lasted two full days. But it seems expensive for the set of features it offers.
Bag it or Junk it: Wait for some time as Samsung is expected to announce the Gear 2 sometime soon.
Rating: 3.5/5
