This nail accessory lets you discreetly control devices with your thumb - IBNLive

New Delhi: The latest gadget to be developed for the wearables industry is a tiny stick-on-nails-like device that lets you control electronics with just your thumb.

Developed by the researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the tiny wireless trackpad can be worn on a thumbnail and is controlled by simply running a finger over its surface.

Dubbed NailO, the highlight of this wearable is that it can be controlled without anyone noticing as runnig a finger over a thumbnail is a natural activity and thus, one can use it discreetly.

An IT World report notes that NailO can also be an easier control option than a traditional trackpad or mouse in some situations.

The processor, battery, sensing chip and Bluetooth radio are included on a circuit board that sits under the capacitive trackpad.

As the circuit board and the capacitive trackpad are connected via a small ribbon cable, the device is not as thin as the fashion nail accessory. However, researchers are aiming to reduce the size of the device by consolidating the components into a single chip.

The researchers are also in talk with manufacturers in China about a battery that could fit in the space of a thumbnail and is only half a millimeter thick.
