Sony plays it safe with the Xperia Z4 - Sin Chew Jit Poh

(Relaxnews) - The Japanese brand has just revealed the specs of the Xperia Z4, the successor to the Z3. Due to go on sale in Japan this summer, the new smartphone seems to be far less innovative than the latest models from Samsung or Huawei.

The Sony Xperia Z4 reprises the basic format of the original Z3, with its 5.2-inch screen (1920x1080 pixels) but is slightly thinner (6.9mm compared to 7.3mm). Shipped with the latest version of Android (5.0), the Z4 packs a 2GHz octa-core Snapdragon 810 processor, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage (expandable through a microSD). The 4G smartphone offers two cameras (20.7MP and 5.1MP) as well as the LDAC audio technology for high quality wireless sound.

Ahead of the launch of the device in Japan this summer, Sony has yet to announce a possible compact version of the Z4 like the existing one based on the Z3. The brand introduced the 10-inch Xperia Z4 Tablet earlier this year, at Mobile World Congress.

From oversized devices to curved screens: novelty is in the air

The Xperia Z4 debuted around one week before LG is expected to unveil its latest flagship, the G4, on April 28. In recent weeks, the tech world has also seen the launches of the Huawei P8 Max and the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, two devices that aim to stand out through particularly innovative design characteristics.

In addition to having an unusually large 6.8-inch screen (1920x1080 pixels), the Huawei P8 Max stands out for being thinner than its main rivals, including the iPhone 6 Plus and the Galaxy Note 4. This double-SIM smartphone will soon go on sale in Europe with a starting price of €549 (around $590).

Another new smartphone making waves in the sector, the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge has a screen that curves across both its right and left sides, making it the first device of its kind. The model is now available starting at €849 in Europe and $699 in the US.

By launching a new model barely distinguishable from its predecessors, Sony could fail to increase its customer base, despite the fact that its smartphone clearly lives up to the competition in terms of performance.
