Auto Expo 2014: M&M to launch clutch-less Quanto with AMT by August - Economic Times

NEW DELHI: Indian automobile major, Mahindra & Mahindra will be launching its compact SUV Quanto with Automatic Manual Transmission (AMT) around August this year, Pravin Shah, Chief Executive, Mahindra & Mahindra Automotive Division told ETAuto.com.
The automatic transmission technology is becoming popular in India due to increasing traffic congestion in cities. Country's leading car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki has also introduced the same technology in its hatch Celerio.
AMT is a frugal substitute for automatic transmission as it enables auto gear shift which enhances driving pleasure in bumper to bumper traffic. "AMT is a pocket-friendly substitute for AT. This is more fuel efficient and cheaper in pricing compared to AT so it has a great potential in the Indian market. We will launch it in the next six months" Shah said.
The company will also introduce this technology in another vehicle models as well.
"AMT is a very suitable substitute for AT for a cost competitive markets like India. The increasing traffic congestion will definitely create increasing demand for such technology," said, Abdul Majeed, Partner Automotive -PwC.
The automobile major is investing substantially in new technology is developing new vehicle platforms, including one for a compact sports utility vehicle, between 2015 and 2017 as part of its programme to strengthen products range.
The UV segment has been quite buoyant in India for quite sometime specially the sub 4-meter category. Quanto falls under sub-4 meter and new technology mightt revive the sales of the vehicle. Mahindra & Mahindra is India's biggest Utility Vehicle manufacturer and has highest market share in the segment.
The Company has also showcased Hybrid XUV500 at the Auto Expo which will be launched in a couple months. The company is investing around Rs 1000 cr on development of the new platform which is a part of previously announced investment of Rs 10,000 crore. The first vehicle on the platform is expected to be launched in the calender year 2016-17.
