Internet speed in India is among the slowest in the world, just 1.3Mbps. But average internet speed likely to jump to 1.8Mbps in a year' The love of Indians for the internet is going to take a major leap, after a massive jump of 40 per cent in the average internet speed is expected to take place in the coming 12 months. The jump of over 1.8 Mbps is being seen as the leap that would be backed by investments in high-speed fibre network and affordable data plans.
Speaking about the report, Akamai Technologies Director of Products for Asia Pacific and Japan Bruno Goveas, said: "Based on current industry growth trends, we expect a 40 per cent to 50 per cent increase in connection speed over the next 12 months. This translates to anything between 1.7 to 1.8 Mbps. Since the past one year there has been a 0.3 Mbps increase. We expect growth in speeds from users in Tier II and Tier III cities as well, and not just Tier I, given the investments from telecom companies , and with users accessing the Internet from mobile phones." The report titled "state of the Internet" further revealed that the first quarter of 2013 witnessed an increase in the average connection speed across the globe by increasing 4 per cent to 3.1 Mbps. Aso wit the corporates by upgrading their bandwidth speeds to keep up with their growth and demand has lowered the prices of the bandwidth thus making it more affordable for the Indian consumer.
