Samsung, Apple top smartphone makers in Q1 - ZDNet

Summary:Samsung and Apple remained the top sellers of smartphones for the first quarter of the year, while LG stepped up to take fourth place behind Huawei.

According to TrendForce, global smartphone shipments for the first quarter of 2015 totalled 291.2 million, down 9.2 percent from the fourth quarter last year.

Samsung took first place, with 27.8 percent market share, a rise from the previous quarter's 24.7 percent. Rival Apple saw its share decline to 19.9 percent, from 23.2 percent in Q4 2014.

According to TrendForce, "Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge have successfully captured consumers' attention in the first quarter." It expects the two devices to ship 20 million in the second quarter of the year.

It also said that Apple has remained strong, despite the first quarter being off-peak season, thanks to continuing demand for its iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus from China.

Huawei was the top dog among Chinese phone makers, ranking third with a share of 7 percent, thanks to the popularity of its Ascend Mate 7 that helped it move 20 million smartphones.

The main cause of the overall decline in smartphone shipments was due to lowered demand in China, the consultancy said. Demand will recover there in the second quarter, to contribute to an expected 311 million in total shipments for the next quarter.

LG jumped to fourth place, with 6.2 percent, as it was not dependent on China and instead focused on the US and Europe.
